Enchanted Forest Creative Play

Inspired by the ideas of local children, the forest is made up of a number of interactive trees, ponds and lily pads that light up, make noise and tell stories. It is designed for a child to play in with their grown-ups and there are elements for crawlers and toddlers right up to children around 10 years old.

Some children will spend just a few minutes in the forest, others will enjoy playing for longer. You are free to come and go as you please and also enjoy our family friendly cafe area at The Hullabaloo. There is no need to book, but please note that at busy times there may be a short wait. Our family friendly café has hot drinks and light snacks available.

We will have a programme of weekly play sessions (music and movement) and some special performances for babies and toddlers in our Spring programme, so please look out for more information about these available soon. Our lovely family cafe is open daily 10am – 2pm and longer when we have performances programmed.

You can download the Creative Play opening times below.

“We came today with three generations and we all loved it. The creative play space is amazing too and totally captivated my 3 year old's imagination. ”

The making of the Enchanted Forest

In September 2017, the EPSRC-funded (RCUK Grant No. EP/G037574/1) Horizon Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) invested in a series of internally-funded PhD student impact grants, in order to extend the reach of the transdisciplinary digital research being carried out in the centre.  CDT student Roma Patel has created the Enchanted Forest for Theatre Hullabaloo, our first installation in the Gillian Dickinson Creative Play space.

Roma Patel is an experienced Scenographer and Digital Artist who commenced her PhD with the Horizon CDT at the University of Nottingham in Autumn 2013. After completing her doctoral research in the University’s Mixed Reality Lab, Roma commenced the collaboration with Theatre Hullabaloo in 2017, the project started with a workshop with local children who were asked their thoughts and ideas on what an enchanted forest should look and feel like.
The Horizon CDT impact grant has allowed Roma to develop the Enchanted Forest, which is the first installation to be housed in the creative play space, and will run until 05 May 2018.

Within the Enchanted Forest, families can play and learn with a fully interactive environment including musical flowers, an illuminated pond and magical trees.
