Caught the knitting bug? Help out The Hullabaloo!

15 Jan ’25

Call out to local knitters/crocheters to help us fill our Bug Hotel for our latest sensory installation!

Here at The Hullabaloo, we make magical, interactive creative play installations for families to come and play creatively together whenever we are open. These are completely free to attend, as we believe in the importance of access to creative play for all children and we understand that creativity is important for development.

Our wonderful play space ‘Bloom’ is coming back to The Hullabaloo next month! Bloom is a garden-like play experience and we need your help to make it buzz with more creative fun!

Bloom is home to a wonderful ‘bug hotel’ that we’d love to fill with knitted bumblebees, ladybirds and other insects. So we’re calling out to all knit and crochet lovers to help build up our Bug Hotel, which is played with by hundreds of children over the installations here in Darlington, and our outreach family hubs across the region.

They can be posted to us at:

Theatre Hullabaloo, Darlington Hippodrome, DL1 1RR, or dropped off to us in person. We ideally need them to be ready for our installation by 8th February, but will be accepted after this also (we always need back-ups!) Please include a note with your name so we can say thank you!

The requirements for safety are as follows:

Minimum size 8cm in length – this is to ensure they’re safe for little ones to play with!

maximum size 20cm in length – so we can have a range of sizes, but not too big!

Please no detachable eyes – babies and young children will be playing with them, so must be safe from choking hazards

Crochet or knitted in traditional bee (or bumble bee) colours. Bees preferred but other pollinators will be considered!

Can be finger puppets or fully knitted characters.

Here’s some example patterns: (you don’t need to follow these ones if you’re a pro, but just for some inspiration!)
